Wisdom That Serves

salok mehlaa 1.
Shalok, First Mehl:
Dharig tinaa kaa jeevi-aa je likh likh vaycheh naa-o.
Cursed are the lives of those who read and write the Lord's Name to sell it.
khaytee jin kee ujrhai khalvaarhay ki-aa thaa-o.
Their crop is devastated - what harvest will they have?
sachai sarmai baahray agai laheh na daad.
Lacking truth and humility, they shall not be appreciated in the world hereafter.
akal ayh na aakhee-ai akal gavaa-ee-ai baad.
Wisdom which leads to arguments is not called wisdom.
aklee saahib sayvee-ai aklee paa-ee-ai maan.
Wisdom leads us to serve our Lord and Master; through wisdom, honor is obtained.
aklee parhH kai bujhee-ai aklee keechai daan.
Wisdom does not come by reading textbooks; wisdom inspires us to give in charity.
naanak aakhai raahu ayhu hor galaaN saitaan. ||1||
Says Nanak, this is the Path; other things lead to Satan. ||1||

In plain words

Cleverness spent on arguing wastes wisdom away. And selling the Naam to get ahead leaves a person empty inside, like a field that grows nothing.

Wisdom is gentle and useful: it leads you to serve the One, it earns quiet honor, it helps you understand what you read, and it moves you to give generously to others. Nanak says this is the path. Everything else just leads you off course.

Wisdom shows in how kindly and generously you serve.
The deeper layer

Wisdom shows itself in service, understanding and giving.

Akal ayh na aakhee-ai akal gavaa-ee-ai baad — cleverness lost in quarrels is no wisdom at all. Writing and selling the Naam for profit is like a field laid waste: there is nothing to harvest. Aklee saahib sayvee-ai — with wisdom you serve the Master, and with wisdom honor comes. Aklee parh kai bujhee-ai, aklee keechai daan — wisdom helps you understand what you read, and wisdom moves you to give. Raahu ayhu — this is the path.

A Question to Sit With

Can you think of someone whose cleverness shows up as kindness instead of winning arguments?
