In plain words

Service that keeps count is no service at all. Kindness done to look good, or to be owed something, misses the whole point.

When the heart is stubborn and full of itself, even the Guru's Word does not taste sweet, and every step forward slips ten steps back. Serving the Guru means walking in the Guru's will. Set down the need to be the center of everything, meet the Guru, and you move naturally into peace. Nanak says such people never forget the Naam; they are joined with the True One.

The best giving keeps no score.
The deeper layer

Service flows when you stop counting and let go of the proud self.

Gantai sayv na hova-ee — service done by counting is no service, and what is done that way is not accepted. A stubborn mind takes one step forward and ten steps back. Aap gavaa-ay satguroo no milai — let go of haumai, the proud separate self, and you meet the Guru. Sehjay rahai samaa-ay — then you rest in natural ease. The obstacle is the proud self, and it can be set down.
