O Nanak, those who are attuned to the Naam are truly detached from the world. ||1||

In plain words

Those who serve the Guru are very fortunate. They stay right in their homes, with all the noise and love of ordinary life, and they carry a still center inside them anyway.

Their attention rests lovingly on the true Word. Even in the middle of chores and family, they are in a kind of quiet meditation. Nanak says those dyed in the Naam are the ones who are free inside — fully in life without being ruled by it.

Peace is found right where you live, by living there with a still heart.
The deeper layer

Deep peace can be found right inside a busy family home.

It is a shalok, a short verse, by Guru Ram Das, the fourth Guru. Satgur sayvan say vadbhaagee — those who serve the True Guru are very lucky. Sachai sabad jinhaa ayk liv laagee — their attention rests lovingly on the True Word.

Girah kutamb meh sahj samaadhee — in their own home and family, they are in sahj samaadhee. Sahj means natural ease. Samaadhee means deep, quiet stillness of mind. They find it without leaving home.

This is a cornerstone of the Sikh path. A bairaagee is someone who is free from being tied to the world. Here the true bairaagee is not the one who runs off to the mountains. It is the one who lives in the world, tuned to the Naam. Think of the calm center of a merry-go-round. Everything spins around it, and it stays still.

A Question to Sit With

Where in your busy day could you carry a little bit of stillness with you?
