The Hook Inside the Bite

jaisay meen paanee meh rahai.
You are like a fish living in the water;
kaal jaal kee suDh nahee lahai.
you do not see the net of death.
jihbaa su-aadee leelit loh.
Trying to taste the flavor, you swallow the hook.
aisay kanik kaamnee baaDhi-o moh. ||1||
You are bound by attachment to wealth and woman. ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

You swim along like a fish, not noticing the net waiting ahead.

Chasing one tasty bite, you swallow the hook hidden inside. That is how wanting more and more can quietly catch you.

The hook is usually hidden inside the very thing that looks tastiest.
The deeper layer

Attachment tastes like a treat and hides a hook, like the fish's one tasty bite. Enjoying life is fine; the danger is how quietly wanting-more can catch us. The pair kanik kaamnee is wealth and desire, the two pulls that bind.

A Question to Sit With

When has chasing something you wanted quietly caught you?
