When The Prayer Is Only A Show

ਸੰਧਿਆ ਕਾਲ ਕਰਹਿ ਸਭਿ ਵਰਤਾ ਜਿਉ ਸਫਰੀ ਦੰਫਾਨ ॥
sanDhi-aa kaal karahi sabh vartaa ji-o safree damfaan.
He says his evening prayers, and observes all the fasts, but this is all just a show.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਭੁਲਾਏ ਊਝੜਿ ਪਾਏ ਨਿਹਫਲ ਸਭਿ ਕਰਮਾਨ ॥੩॥
parabhoo bhulaa-ay oojharh paa-ay nihfal sabh karmaan. ||3||
God made him stray from the path, and sent him into the wilderness. All his actions are useless. ||3||

In plain words

Prayers said out loud, fasts kept carefully — and yet, if it is all a performance for others to see, it stays empty inside.

A heart that has wandered far from its own truth can do every holy thing and still feel lost in a wilderness. The actions are not wrong; they are just missing the one thing that would make them alive.

The same practice can be empty or alive, depending on whether your heart is in it.
The deeper layer

Prayers and fasts stay empty when they are done only for show.

The verse lists practices that look sincere: evening prayers, fasts, and other careful habits. It calls them damfaan, a show, when the heart is not in them.

Then comes a hard line: God led this person astray, into the wilderness. The best way to hear it is through Hukam, the One's order that flows through everything. It is not a punishment sent from outside. When you turn away from your own depth, you drift off course all by yourself.

Think of paddling a canoe and ignoring the river's current. Nobody has to push you. The water simply carries you somewhere you never meant to go.

A Question to Sit With

What makes something you do feel real instead of just going through the motions?
