Melted Gold Becomes Solid

ਜਿਉ ਕਨਿਕੋ ਕੋਠਾਰੀ ਚੜਿਓ ਕਬਰੋ ਹੋਤ ਫਿਰੋ ॥
ji-o kaniko kothaaree charhi-o kabro hot firo.
When gold is melted in the crucible, it flows freely everywhere.
ਜਬ ਤੇ ਸੁਧ ਭਏ ਹੈ ਬਾਰਹਿ ਤਬ ਤੇ ਥਾਨ ਥਿਰੋ ॥੨॥
jab tay suDh bha-ay hai baareh tab tay thaan thiro. ||2||
But when it is made into pure solid bars of gold, then it remains stationary. ||2||

In plain words

Melted gold runs all over the place, this way and that, never staying still.

But once that same gold is set into a solid bar, it holds its shape and stays.

The same energy that scatters you can settle into something solid and steady.
The deeper layer

A scattered mind is like melted gold, and a settled mind is like a solid gold bar.

It follows the same path as the Rahao, the center line: from scattered to settled. Ji-o kaniko kothaaree charhi-o — gold melted in the furnace runs everywhere. That is the mind pulled in every direction.

Thaan thiro — once it is made into a pure solid bar, it stays in its place. That bar is sahaj, the natural steadiness of a heart that has found its ground.

Nothing new was added to the gold. It is the same gold. It has simply come to rest. Think of wet cement that becomes a strong sidewalk. It is the same stuff, but now you can stand on it.

A Question to Sit With

What helps your busy mind finally hold still?
