In plain words

A young bride giggles with her friends. They chat about the one she loves.

But the moment he walks in, all the chatter falls away. She goes shy and tender, and covers her face.

Talking about something you love is not the same as finally standing in its presence.
The deeper layer

Talking about the One is very different from meeting the One.

Guru Arjan uses a picture Gurbani often uses. The soul is the bride who loves. The One is the beloved. A young bride giggles with her friends about her husband-to-be. But when he actually comes home, she goes quiet and shy. Mukh kaaj lajo — she covers her face in shyness.

The chatter is like knowing about the One from what others say. The quiet is what happens when you meet the One for yourself.

Think of reading all about the ocean in a book. Then you stand on the beach and feel the waves on your feet. Suddenly you have nothing to say, because now you know.

A Question to Sit With

When has something turned out to be quieter and deeper than you imagined?
