My tongue does not taste - all is bland without the Lord's sublime essence. Without God, I suffer and die. ||1||Pause||

In plain words

How can I get through a day without You, my One? Without You, pain takes hold of me.

My tongue tastes nothing; without Your sweetness, everything is bland. Without You, every passing hour aches.

Without the One, even good things lose their flavor.
The deeper layer

When the One feels far away, even the best things in life taste flat.

This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad. Its mood is longing, the feeling Raag Saarang is known for.

Guru Nanak asks, "Har bin ki-o rahee-ai," how can I get by without the One? Feekee means bland. Without the One, even the tongue tastes nothing.

Think of your favorite dinner on a day you miss someone very much. The food is the same, but somehow it has no flavor.

The last words speak of deep hurt when the One is missing. The heart of it is an ache of emptiness. It is the kind of missing that shows how much you love.

A Question to Sit With

Has something you love ever felt flat because someone you cared about was not there?
