Wilderness Or Garden

Wherever they do not listen to the Stories of the Lord with their ears - the utterly desolate wilderness is there.
jahaaN keertan saaDhsangat ras tah saghan baas falaaNnad. ||2||
Where the Kirtan of the Lord's Praises are sung with love in the Saadh Sangat - there is fragrance and fruit and joy in abundance. ||2||

In plain words

Where no one listens for the stories of the One, a place feels like an empty, lonely desert, however crowded it is.

But where the Sangat sings the One's praise with love, the place becomes a blooming garden. It is full of sweetness, full of fruit, full of life.

What people gather to share is what turns a place into a desert or a garden.
The deeper layer

A place without listening feels like a desert, and a place full of shared song feels like a garden.

Sarvan means ears. Where no one listens with their ears to the stories of the One, it is mahaa bha-i-aan udi-aanad, a scary, empty wilderness.

Where there is keertan, singing the One's praise, in the saaDhsangat, the Sangat — people gathered together to remember the One — there is saghan baas falaa: rich fragrance and lots of fruit. Picture a dry lot turning into a blooming garden.

This is Suniai, deep listening, the thing Japji Sahib praises. It turns a wasteland into a garden. What decides which one you live in is the Sangat you sit with and how well you listen.

A Question to Sit With

What makes a gathering feel alive and nourishing to you?
