Sikhism·Raag Saarang·Shabad 23
Verse 4 of 5

One Awake Moment

ਬਿਨੁ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕੋਟਿ ਬਰਖ ਜੀਵੈ ਸਗਲੀ ਅਉਧ ਬ੍ਰਿਥਾਨਦ ॥
bin simran kot barakh jeevai saglee a-oDh barithaanad.
Without meditative remembrance on the Lord, one may live for millions of years, but his life would be totally useless.
ਏਕ ਨਿਮਖ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਭਜਨੁ ਕਰਿ ਤਉ ਸਦਾ ਸਦਾ ਜੀਵਾਨਦ ॥੩॥
ayk nimakh gobind bhajan kar ta-o sadaa sadaa jeevaanad. ||3||
But if he vibrates and meditates on the Lord of the Universe, for even a moment, then he shall live forever and ever. ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

You could live for millions of years. But if you never once remembered the One, all that time would be wasted.

Remember the One for even a single moment, and you will live forever and ever.

How awake you are counts for more than how long you live.
The deeper layer

A life is measured by how awake it is.

Kot barakh jeevai means living millions of years. Without simran, loving remembrance, the verse calls all of that time barithaa, wasted.

Then the other side. Ayk nimakh, a single moment of remembering gobind, the Lord of the world, and you sadaa sadaa jeevaanad, live forever and ever.

Think of a long car trip spent staring at a screen, next to five minutes of really watching a sunset. The five minutes can mean more. Guru Arjan, the fifth Guru, says the same about life. Being fully present counts for more than a long stretch of time.

A Question to Sit With

When was a single moment so alive that you still remember it clearly?
