The Servant Of Your Servants

ਕਵਨ ਉਪਮਾ ਕਉਨ ਬਡਾਈ ਕਿਆ ਗੁਨ ਕਹਉ ਰੀਝਾਏ ॥
kavan upmaa ka-un badaa-ee ki-aa gun kaha-o reejhaa-ay.
What praise, what glory and what virtues should I utter, in order to please the Lord?
ਹੋਤ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਲ ਦੀਨ ਦਇਆ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਦਾਸ ਦਸਾਏ ॥੪॥੮॥
hot kirpaal deen da-i-aa parabh jan naanak daas dasaa-ay. ||4||8||
That humble being, unto whom the Merciful Lord is kind - O servant Nanak, he is the slave of God's slaves. ||4||8||

In plain words

What could I possibly say that is good enough to thank the One? I run out of words; every praise feels too small.

Nanak says: the one the kind One blesses becomes the servant of the One's servants. That is honor enough for me.

The gladdest place is often the humblest one.
The deeper layer

The gladdest place is the lowest one: the servant of the servants.

Kavan upmaa ka-un badaa-ee — what praise, what glory could ever be enough? Every word feels too small.

Jan naanak daas dasaa-ay — the humble one becomes the servant of the servants. After the whole self has turned toward the One, glad smallness is the fitting answer. Grace meets the one who has stepped out of its way. Think of a helper at the langar who is happiest pouring water for everyone else.

A Question to Sit With

Why can serving others sometimes feel better than being served?
