That person, within whose heart the One Pure Word abides, realizes the essence of the Vedas. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

All the others wander lost in doubt. They do not understand.

Whoever has the one pure Word living in their heart understands the heart of the Vedas, the old wise books.

One true word living in your heart can unlock what a thousand books were pointing at.
The deeper layer

When one true Word lives in your heart, the meaning of all the wise books opens up.

This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad.

Guru Arjan says most people wander in bharam, doubt and confusion. They do not understand.

But then he speaks of "ayk sudhaakhar," the one pure Word. When it lives in someone's heart, that person grasps the tat, the heart, of the Vedas, the old holy books of India.

This honors the holy books. It says their deepest point is understood from the inside, by living it, not only by saying the words. Think of a key. A whole ring of doors stays shut until you find the one key that fits.

A Question to Sit With

Has one simple truth ever suddenly made a lot of confusing things make sense?
