In plain words

You can walk the ways of the world, always trying to please people and be liked.

But as long as your heart has no light inside, you are walking in pitch dark. It does not matter how bright the show looks from outside.

Pleasing everyone on the outside is still darkness until the light comes on inside.
The deeper layer

Trying to please everyone will not light up your heart.

Guru Arjan describes someone who walks the ways of the world, always trying to look good to people.

But "ja-o la-o ridai nahee pargaasaa" means as long as there is no light in the heart. Until then, he says, it is andh andhaaraa, pitch dark.

Think of a stage with bright lights on the outside, while the actor feels lost and alone inside. Clapping from the crowd cannot switch on the light within. Only real inner seeing can.

A Question to Sit With

What is the difference between doing something to look good and doing it because you mean it?
