Verse 3 of 5

You Have To Plant The Seed

ਜੈਸੇ ਧਰਤੀ ਸਾਧੈ ਬਹੁ ਬਿਧਿ ਬਿਨੁ ਬੀਜੈ ਨਹੀ ਜਾਂਮੈ ॥
jaisay Dhartee saaDhai baho biDh bin beejai nahee jaaNmai.
The land may be prepared in every way, but nothing sprouts without being planted.
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨੁ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ ਤੁਟੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੈ ॥੨॥
raam naam bin mukat na ho-ee hai tutai naahee abhimaanai. ||2||
Just so, without the Lord's Name, no one is liberated, nor is egotistical pride eradicated. ||2||

In plain words

You can prepare the land in every way, but nothing grows if no seed is planted.

In the same way, without the Name of the One, no one is set free, and the tight grip of pride never lets go.

All the preparation in the world grows nothing until you plant the seed.
The deeper layer

You can get the field ready, but nothing grows until you plant a seed.

Guru Arjan uses a farming picture. A farmer can plow, water and weed a field perfectly. But if no seed goes in, nothing comes up.

He says the Name is the seed. Without "raam naam," the Name of the One, there is no mukat, freedom. And abhimaan, pride, does not break.

Getting ready is good and needed. But it cannot take the place of the one thing it was all for. Think of setting the table beautifully and never cooking dinner.

A Question to Sit With

What is something you can set up perfectly but still have to begin?
