Verse 3 of 5

Wiped Clean, Wide Awake

ਗਾਵਤ ਸੁਨਤ ਸੁਨਾਵਤ ਸਰਧਾ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਪੀ ਵਡਭਾਗੇ ॥
gaavat sunat sunaavat sarDhaa har ras pee vadbhaagay.
The very fortunate ones drink in the Sublime Essence of the Lord, singing, reciting and listening to the Lord's Praises.
ਕਲਿ ਕਲੇਸ ਮਿਟੇ ਸਭਿ ਤਨ ਤੇ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਲਿਵ ਜਾਗੇ ॥੨॥
kal kalays mitay sabh tan tay raam naam liv jaagay. ||2||
All their sufferings and struggles are wiped away from their bodies; they remain lovingly awake and aware in the Name of the Lord. ||2||

In plain words

The lucky ones drink in the sweetness of the One.

They sing, they listen, and they share it with faith.

Their old aches and struggles wash away.

They stay awake to the One, like a light that stays on inside them.

Joining in the singing quietly washes the old aches away.
The deeper layer

The lucky ones are simply those who join in the singing.

The practice is singing and deep listening, done together. Its fruit is two things. Old sufferings wash away. And people stay awake and alert in the Name, the One's living presence.

The verse calls them vadbhaagay, "very fortunate." But the good luck is the joining in itself. Think of a choir: the joy comes from singing along, not from winning a prize afterward.

A Question to Sit With

When has singing or sharing something with others lifted a heaviness off you?
