Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

My beloved One is not far away.

My heart trusts the word of the Guru, and I have found the One, the support of my every breath.

The One you long for was never far away.
The deeper layer

The One you are missing was never far away.

This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad.

"Door naahee mayro prabh pi-aaraa" means my beloved One is not far. In the shabad before, the heart ached for the One. Here, Guru Nanak gives the answer: the One is near.

"Satgur bachan mayro man maani-aa" means my mind trusted the words of the True Guru. This is more than agreeing. It is living by what is true, from the inside. The Japji calls it mannai.

Think of a child calling out for a parent who was in the next room all along. The One is found right here, holding up every breath.

A Question to Sit With

When did you realize something you were searching for was closer than you thought?
