In the awful hell of the fire of the womb, you did penance, upside-down; each and every instant, you sang His Glorious Praises. ||1||Pause||

In plain words

Why not remember the One right now?

Even before you were born, curled up and hidden, you sang the One's praises at every moment.

The best moment to turn toward the One is always the one you are in now.
The deeper layer

Now is the time to remember the One.

This is the "pause" line, the rahaa-o, the center of the shabad. Ray moorhay is a sharp wake-up call, like "Hey, don't you see?" It comes from someone who cares.

Then the verse uses an old picture of life before birth. Curled up in the womb, the baby was said to remember the One at every moment. The old words make it sound like a hard place. What matters for us is the tender part: there was a closeness to the One at the very start of life.

Think of a lullaby you heard as a tiny baby. You may have forgotten the words, but the tune comes back when you hear it. Forgetting is something to wake up from, not to be ashamed of.

A Question to Sit With

What is something good you could begin right now instead of putting off?
