In plain words

There is only One. And the One is found by the True Guru's grace — a gift that is always here, waiting for an open heart.

My mind, why are you lured away by other things?

Here and hereafter, the One is always your helper. The One stays with your soul and helps you in everything you do.

The steadiest friend you have is the One already with you.
The deeper layer

Why chase things that can't stay, when your truest friend is already with you?

This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad. It asks a gentle question. Aan means "other things": all the passing stuff that pulls the mind away. A new game, a new gadget, the next thing everyone wants. They are fun, but they don't last.

Eet oot means "here and there": in this life and beyond it. There, the One stays sahaa-ee, your helper. The One is also jee-a sang, the companion of your very soul. The shabad opens with ik-onkaar, "there is One." So the question is simple: why run after what fades, when the steadiest friend is right here?

A Question to Sit With

What things pull your attention away from what matters most to you?
