When the Lord, the Destroyer of the pains of the poor becomes merciful, the Messenger of Death is changed into the Righteous Judge of Dharma. ||1||

In plain words

Let go of trying to be clever and outsmart everything.

Simply step into the shelter of loving, wise people.

When the One who ends the pain of the helpless turns kind to you, even what you once feared turns fair.

The harsh becomes just.

When your heart is at peace, even what you feared loses its sting.
The deeper layer

Put down the clever tricks, go to the shelter of holy people, and even what you feared becomes fair.

Chhod si-aanap — let go of your cleverness. Think of a student trying to trick their way through a test. It is tiring, and it never works. The verse says: step instead into the shelter of the holy, the saadhoo.

The One is deen dukh bhanjan, the one who breaks the pain of the helpless. When that One turns kind, something surprising happens. The old verse says Jam, the messenger of death, becomes Dharam Raa-ay, the fair judge. In simple words: what once felt terrifying loses its fright. It becomes fair and gentle instead.

A Question to Sit With

Has something you were once scared of ever turned out to be gentler than you expected?
