Mother, Father, Friend — All in One

Without the One Lord, there is no other at all. No one else can equal Him.
The Lord is Nanak's Mother, Father and Sibling, the Giver of Peace, his Breath of Life. ||2||2||21||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

There is only the One; nothing else even comes close.

Nanak says, the One is my mother, my father, my brother, the giver of peace, the very breath of my life.

The One holds every kind of love a heart could ever need.
The deeper layer

There is only the One, and the One is every kind of love we need.

Aykas bin naahee ko doojaa — without the One, there is no other at all. Nothing else even comes close.

Then the verse gathers all our dearest people into the One: mother, father, brother or sister. The One is also the giver of peace and the very breath of life. This is the "One" from the Guru Granth Sahib's first verse, made warm and close. Think of a hug that feels like home. The One is not far away, but is every kind of love a heart could need.

A Question to Sit With

Which people feel like family to you, even if they were not born into it?
