Even those who are drowning in the horrible, deep dark pit are carried across in the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy. ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Those who walk the path find peace, and those who talk with them are carried across too.

Even someone sinking in the deepest, darkest pit is carried safely across in the Sangat.

No one is ever too lost to be carried back into the light.
The deeper layer

The Sangat can carry even the most lost person to safety.

Maarag chalay means those who walk the path. They find peace. Even those who simply gosat, talk with them, are carried along.

The verse pictures someone sinking in a deep, dark pit. It means feeling completely lost. But the point is hope: saadhoo sang paar paray, in the Sangat — people gathered together to remember the One — they are carried across. Think of a tired swimmer far from the shore. A friend swims up and says, "Hold on to me." Suddenly the shore is within reach.

A Question to Sit With

Have you ever helped someone who felt like they were sinking? Or been helped that way yourself?
