In plain words

There is only One. And the One is found by the True Guru's grace — a gift that is always here, waiting for an open heart.

I am the dust under the feet of the One's humble saints.

Joining the Sangat, I have found the highest place there is. The One fills everyone and everything, everywhere.

The highest place is found by taking the humblest one.
The deeper layer

The best place to be is in the Sangat, humble as dust.

It opens with the Mangalacharan, the short blessing line: ik-onkaar satgur parsaad, "One Creator, known by the grace of the True Guru." It starts the hymns of Guru Ram Das, the Fourth Guru, in Raag Saarang. The lines after it are the "pause" line, the rahaa-o, the center of the shabad.

Dhoor means the dust of the feet. It is Guru Ram Das's favorite picture of humility. Sat sangat is the Sangat — people gathered together to remember the One. Param pad is the highest state. Aatam raam bharpoor means the One fills everyone.

Think of the youngest kid on a great team, happy just to sit on the bench. Being near the good players, they learn the most.

A Question to Sit With

Who are the people whose company quietly makes you better?
