Waves Returning to the Sea

ਕਾਟੇ ਅਗਿਆਨ ਤਿਮਰ ਨਿਰਮਲੀਆ ਬੁਧਿ ਬਿਗਾਸ ਬਿਬੇਕਾ ॥
kaatay agi-aan timar nirmalee-aa buDh bigaas bibaykaa.
I have cut away the darkness of ignorance and become immaculate; my discriminationg intellect has blossomed forth.
ਜਿਉ ਜਲ ਤਰੰਗ ਫੇਨੁ ਜਲ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ ਸੇਵਕ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਭਏ ਏਕਾ ॥੧॥
ji-o jal tarang fayn jal ho-ee hai sayvak thaakur bha-ay aykaa. ||1||
As the waves of water and the foam become water again, the Lord and His servant become One. ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The fog of not-knowing lifted, and clear understanding opened up inside me like a flower.

Just as a wave and its foam are only the sea, the one who loves and the One they love turn out to be one.

You were never separate from the One — like a wave was never separate from the sea.
The deeper layer

Kaatay agi-aan timar — the darkness of not-knowing is cut away — and budh bigaas bibeka, clear understanding blossoms. Then comes one of Gurbani's great images of oneness: ji-o jal tarang fain jal ho-ee hai — as a wave and its foam are only water, so sayvak thaakur bhaay aykaa, the one who serves and the One served become one. You were never separate; like a wave, you were always the sea.

A Question to Sit With

Can you think of two things that look separate but are made of the same thing?
