The Jewel Was Home All Along

ਖੋਜਤ ਖੋਜਤ ਭਇਓ ਬੈਰਾਗੀ ਫਿਰਿ ਆਇਓ ਦੇਹ ਗਿਰਾਮਾ ॥
khojat khojat bha-i-o bairaagee fir aa-i-o dayh giraamaa.
Searching and searching, I became depressed; I wandered all around, and finally came back to my body-village.

The Merciful Guru made this deal, and I have obtained the priceless jewel. ||1||

In plain words

I searched and searched until I was worn out.

I wandered far and wide, and then I came back home, to my own body and heart.

There the kind Guru made the deal for me.

The priceless jewel dropped right into my hand.

The thing you are searching the whole world for is often waiting where you started — inside you.
The deeper layer

I searched the whole world, and the jewel was at home inside me.

Khojat khojat — searching and searching. The seeker became bairaagee, here meaning tired and worn out from the long hunt. Then he came back to dayh giraamaa, the "body-village," his own body and heart.

Think of hunting all over the house for your glasses, and they were on your head. The laal agaamaa, the priceless jewel that seemed out of reach, was in the one place we forget to look.

The Guru, the true teacher, is the kind one who made the deal. That means the Guru helps you finally see what you already have.

A Question to Sit With

Have you ever looked everywhere for something and found it was close to home all along?
