My One Hope

ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਨਿਧਾਨ ਗੁਣ ਨਾਇਕ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਸੁਖ ਸਮੂਹ ਸਭ ਨਾਥੇ ॥
kirpaa niDhaan gun naa-ik thaakur sukh samooh sabh naathay.
O Treasure of Mercy, Master of Excellence, my Lord and Master, Ocean of peace, Lord of all.
ਏਕ ਆਸ ਮੋਹਿ ਤੇਰੀ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਅਉਰ ਦੁਤੀਆ ਆਸ ਬਿਰਾਥੇ ॥੧॥
ayk aas mohi tayree su-aamee a-or dutee-aa aas biraathay. ||1||
My hopes rest in You alone, O my Lord and Master; hope in anything else is useless. ||1||

In plain words

Treasure of kindness, home of every good quality, ocean of calm, keeper of all — that is who You are to me.

My one hope rests in You; leaning my whole heart on anything else turns out to be leaning on air.

Some things can hold a little of your hope, but only the One can hold all of it.
The deeper layer

The One has many loving names, and all hope rests in the One.

Kirpaa niDhaan means treasure of mercy. Gun naa-ik means master of every good quality. Sukh samooh means all peace gathered together. Name after name, the verse fills up with praise.

Then it says ayk aas mohi tayree — my one hope is You. Other hopes, it says, are biraathay, empty. That does not mean other things are worthless. It means they cannot carry the full weight of a heart. Think of a chair with a wobbly leg. It is fine to sit on for a moment, but you cannot lean your whole self on it. Only the One can hold that much.

A Question to Sit With

What is something you once put all your hope in that could not quite hold it?
