Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The Guru gave me the Name to walk beside me, a companion I carry everywhere.

The moment the One's word settles in my heart, even for an instant, all my restless hunger quietly lifts.

Even a moment of holding the One in your heart can quiet a hunger that nothing else could fill.
The deeper layer

The Guru has given me the Naam as a friend who walks beside me.

This is the pause line, the rahaa-o, the center of the shabad.

Saathay means as a companion, someone who goes along with you. Think of a friend who walks home from school with you every day. The road feels shorter and safer. The Name is that kind of friend.

The promise is big. Nimakh means an instant, a blink. If the One's word lives in the heart for even that long, sagal bhookh — all hunger — lifts. This is the deep hunger under all our smaller wants. With the Name, company and contentment arrive together.

A Question to Sit With

What is a hunger in you that is about something deeper than food?
