Sikhism·Raag Saarang·Shabad 6
Verse 4 of 6

Steady Because the Ground Is Steady

satgur purakh achal achlaa mat jis darirh-taa naam aDhaaray.
The True is the Primal Being, Unmoving and Unchanging. One who takes the Support of the Naam, the Name of the Lord - his intellect becomes focused and steady.
ਤਿਸੁ ਆਗੈ ਜੀਉ ਦੇਵਉ ਅਪੁਨਾ ਹਉ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਬਲਿਹਾਰੇ ॥੩॥
tis aagai jee-o dayva-o apunaa ha-o satgur kai balihaaray. ||3||
I offer my soul to Him; I am a sacrifice to my True Guru. ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The One is completely steady — never moving, never changing. And a heart that leans on the Name grows steady too, sure and unshaken.

I give my whole self to the One, and I gladly give myself to my Guru.

Lean on something steady, and you become steady too.
The deeper layer

Lean on what is steady, and you grow steady too.

Satgur purakh achal achlaa — the One never moves and never changes. Mat jis drirh-taa naam adhaaray — a mind that takes the Naam as its support grows firm and focused.

Tis aagai jee-o dayva-o apunaa — I offer my whole self to the One. Ha-o satgur kai balihaaray — I give myself gladly to my Guru. Think of a young vine climbing a strong post. The wind blows, and the vine holds, because the post holds.

A Question to Sit With

What is the steadiest thing you can lean on when everything shakes?
