Stay Here With Me

ਕੋਟਿ ਲਾਖ ਰਾਜ ਸੁਖ ਪਾਏ ਇਕ ਨਿਮਖ ਪੇਖਿ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟਾਨਾਂ ॥

I obtain tens of thousands and millions of regal pleasures, if I gaze upon Your Blessed Vision, even for an instant.

When You, O God, say, "My servant, stay here with me", Nanak knows unlimited peace. ||2||23||46||

In plain words

One glimpse of the One feels richer than all the treasures and pleasures of a thousand kingdoms.

Nanak says: when the One tells me, "Stay here with me," a peace beyond anything I could measure fills me completely.

Being told stay here with me by what you love is worth more than all the riches in the world.
The deeper layer

Being told "stay here with me" is worth more than millions of treasures.

The verse weighs two things. On one side are kot laakh raaj sukh, millions of royal pleasures. On the other is one nimakh, one blink of an eye, seeing the One. The blink wins.

But the deepest joy is a word of belonging: "My servant, stay here with me."

Think of a new kid at school when someone says, "Come sit with us." That feeling beats any prize. To be wanted, to be asked to stay, is a peace that has no end.

A Question to Sit With

When has someone making you feel welcome to stay meant more to you than any gift?
