When Words and Heart Don't Match

ਹਿਰਦੈ ਕਪਟੁ ਨਿਤ ਕਪਟੁ ਕਮਾਵਹਿ ਮੁਖਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਸੁਣਾਇ ॥
hirdai kapat nit kapat kamaaveh mukhahu har har sunaa-ay.
One whose heart is filled with falsehood, continues to practice falsehood, even while he teaches and preaches about the Lord.
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਲੋਭੁ ਮਹਾ ਗੁਬਾਰਾ ਤੁਹ ਕੂਟੈ ਦੁਖ ਖਾਇ ॥੪॥
antar lobh mahaa gubaaraa tuh kootai dukh khaa-ay. ||4||
Within him is the utter darkness of greed. He is thrashed like wheat, and suffers in pain. ||4||

In plain words

When someone's heart is full of pretending, they keep pretending — even while they say all the right words about the One.

Inside there is a heavy fog of wanting-more, and it leaves them hollow and aching. What we say only helps when the life underneath it matches.

Fine words only help when the life underneath them matches.
The deeper layer

Words about the One help most when the life underneath them matches.

Hirdai kapat nit kapat kamaaveh — with kapat, pretense, in the heart, they keep living pretense. Mukhahu har har sunaa-ay — all the while the mouth speaks of the One.

Antar lobh mahaa gubaaraa — inside is the thick dark of lobh, greed. Tuh kootai dukh khaa-ay — like threshing empty husks, it yields only pain. Think of a beautifully wrapped box with nothing inside. A true life fills the box, so the gift matches the wrapping.

A Question to Sit With

Why does it feel bad inside when what we say doesn't match what we do?
