Light in the Sangat

I am nothing; nothing belongs to me. I have no power or control.

O Creator, Cause of causes, Lord God of Nanak, I am saved and redeemed in the Society of the Saints. ||2||36||59||

In plain words

I am not the one who runs the whole show.

Nothing here is mine, and the power is not in my hands.

Nanak says: the One does everything and makes everything happen.

In the Sangat, I am carried and lifted.

Letting go of running it all yourself is a relief, not a loss.
The deeper layer

Letting go of running everything yourself is a relief, and the Sangat helps carry you.

Ha-o naahee means "I am nothing." That isn't putting yourself down. It is the melting of haumai, the ego. Ego is the tiring idea that I'm a separate self who made everything on my own. Letting that go feels like freedom.

Karan karaavan means the One who does everything and makes everything happen. Santan sang udhaaree means lifted up in the Sangat — people gathered together to remember the One. The Sangat carries us. Think of a team lifting a heavy table together. Alone it's too much; together it rises easily.

A Question to Sit With

When has being with good people made a heavy thing feel lighter?
