Light Poured Into Clay

ਕਵਨ ਮੂਲੁ ਪ੍ਰਾਨੀ ਕਾ ਕਹੀਐ ਕਵਨ ਰੂਪੁ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟਾਨਿਓ ॥
kavan mool paraanee kaa kahee-ai kavan roop daristaani-o.
What is the origin of the human beings? How beautiful they are!
ਜੋਤਿ ਪ੍ਰਗਾਸ ਭਈ ਮਾਟੀ ਸੰਗਿ ਦੁਲਭ ਦੇਹ ਬਖਾਨਿਓ ॥੧॥
jot pargaas bha-ee maatee sang dulabh dayh bakhaani-o. ||1||
When God infuses His Light into clay, the human body is judged to be precious. ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Where do we come from?

Why is a human being such a wonderful thing?

The One pours its own light into plain clay.

That is what makes a body precious.

You are plain earth carrying a bright light.

You are ordinary clay carrying an extraordinary light.
The deeper layer

Every person is plain clay with the One's own light shining inside.

Kavan mool — where do we come from? Then comes the answer: jot pargaas bha-ee maatee sang, the Light shines inside the clay. Jot means light, the One's own light.

The body is simple earth, like a clay lamp. But it carries a flame, and that makes it dulabh dayh, a rare and precious human body. Every person of every kind carries that same light. This is why Guru Nanak taught that all people are equal.

A Question to Sit With

If everyone carries the same light inside, how might that change the way you see people?
