The One is the very breath that holds my life up. The One is my dearest friend and companion, the single Maker of the whole universe.
Nanak says, my Master is higher than everything there is, and still so close. Again and again I bow, glad to be small before the One.
The highest One is also the nearest friend.
Paraan adhaar means "the support of the breath of life." Meet saajan means "friend and companion." Aykankaarai means "the one Creator." Guru Arjan holds the highest, sabh tay ooch, and the nearest, a friend, in one breath.
Think of a world-famous teacher who still remembers your name and sits beside you at lunch. The One we long for is also the friend right next to us. Baar baar namaskaarai means bowing again and again. It comes from glad love, not from fear.
