Verse 5 of 5

Kings Leave, the Steady Remain

ਰਾਣਾ ਰਾਉ ਸਭੈ ਕੋਊ ਚਾਲੈ ਝੂਠੁ ਛੋਡਿ ਜਾਇ ਪਾਸਾਰੁ ॥
raanaa raa-o sabhai ko-oo chaalai jhooth chhod jaa-ay paasaar.
All the kings and queens shall depart; they must leave this false expanse.
ਨਾਨਕ ਸੰਤ ਸਦਾ ਥਿਰੁ ਨਿਹਚਲੁ ਜਿਨ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਆਧਾਰੁ ॥੪॥੬॥
naanak sant sadaa thir nihchal jin raam naam aaDhaar. ||4||6||
O Nanak, the Saints are eternally steady and stable; they take the Support of the Name of the Lord. ||4||6||

In plain words

Kings and queens, the rich and the mighty — every one of them moves on in the end, leaving behind the big show they built.

Nanak says: the saints, who lean on the Naam, stay steady and sure, unshaken, through it all.

Power and riches move on; a heart rooted in the Name stays steady.
The deeper layer

Kings and queens all move on; those who lean on the Name stay steady.

Raanaa raa-o means queens and kings. All of them leave, and they leave behind jhooth paasaar, the big show that could not last.

Sant sadaa thir nihchal means the saints stay steady and unshaken. Why? Because they have raam naam aaDhaar, the Name as their support. Think of a tree with deep roots. Storms bend the branches, but the tree stays. Power passes away; a heart rooted in the One stays put.

A Question to Sit With

What makes a person steady when everything around them changes?
