Raag Soohee
Commentary

Raag Soohee, Chau-Padas, Mehl 4 (Guru Ram Das)

The mind that adores the Name finds every wish filled, every fear stilled — and the Guru becomes its only family.

The Arc

Guru Ram Das opens his Soohee with a shabad of arrival: the mind holds the Name through gur sabad, and both craving and the fear of death dissolve. The Rahao calls the mind to sing, and to drink the essence with joy once the Guru awakens it. Then the widening: a plea to be admitted to the sat sangat and to serve it; the discovery that the Name is the whole sweetness of the teaching, the nectar that ends all thirst; and the closing surrender — the Guru is the only caste and honor the disciple claims.

Key Vocabulary

  • aaraaDhi-aa: worshipped, held with adoring attention
  • ras gatkay: drinking the essence with a joyful gulp
  • satsangat: the company of those who love and sing the One
  • har amrit / har jal: the Name as nectar and as plain water — treasure and daily need at once
  • jaat paat: caste and social standing, here dissolved into the Guru
  • chaylaa: disciple, student

Themes and Cross-Connections

The dissolving of jaat paat into the Guru is Guru Ram Das's signature note, and it prepares the ground for this section's caste-leveling climax. The thirst-quenched-by-nectar image ties the shabad to the whole Soohee thread of love as the deep dye and the drink that satisfies.

For Raag Soohee

Soohee is the raag of the love-colored robe, and this opening shabad sets its key: the heart that adores the Name is filled to the brim, and belongs wholly to the Guru who colors it.

Translation Notes

hamree jaat paat gur satgur foregrounds caste-leveling — rendered as belonging ("the Guru is my family and my honor") rather than social rank. vaychi-o sir (sold the head) is rendered as total belonging, not servitude. dar jam kay (fear of death's messenger) is softened to "fear of death loosens its grip."
