There is only One. And the One is found by the True Guru's grace — a gift that is always here, waiting for an open heart.
The One I am looking for lives right here, deep inside me. It never runs off to somewhere far away.
So why would I set down something sweet and full of life? Why swallow something bitter instead?
The One we are looking for lives inside us. We don't have to go anywhere to find it.
The verse says it plainly: antar vasai na baahar jaa-ay — the One lives within and does not go outside. Think of hunting all over the house for your glasses while they sit on your head. The search ends the moment you look in the right place.
Then comes a gentle question: amrit chhod kaahay bikh khaa-ay — why set down nectar and eat poison? Amrit is nectar, the sweet drink of life. Bikh is poison. It is like leaving a warm, home-cooked meal on the table to eat junk that makes you feel sick. The verse asks kindly, not angrily. Why reach for what harms when what feeds you is already here?
When have you looked far away for something that was right beside you the whole time?
