A Basket of Fragrant Virtues

gunaa kaa hovai vaasulaa kadh vaas la-eejai.
One who has a basket of fragrant virtues, should enjoy its fragrance.
jay gun hovniH saajnaa mil saajh kareejai.
If my friends have virtues, I will share in them.
saajh kareejai gunah kayree chhod avgan chalee-ai.
Let us form a partnership, and share our virtues; let us abandon our faults, and walk on the Path.
pahiray patambar kar adambar aapnaa pirh malee-ai.
Let us wear our virtues like silk clothes; let us decorate ourselves, and enter the arena.
jithai jaa-ay bahee-ai bhalaa kahee-ai jhol amrit peejai.
Let us speak of goodness, wherever we go and sit; let us skim off the Ambrosial Nectar, and drink it in.
gunaa kaa hovai vaasulaa kadh vaas la-eejai. ||3||
One who has a basket of fragrant virtues, should enjoy its fragrance. ||3||

In plain words

If you carry a basket of good qualities, open it and enjoy the fragrance. And if your friends carry good qualities too, join up and share them around.

Let us pool our goodness and leave the meanness behind as we walk on together. Let us wear our virtues like fine silk, dress ourselves up in them, and step boldly into the day.

Wherever we go and sit, let us speak kindly and skim off the sweetness of life to drink together. If you carry a basket of good qualities, open it and share the fragrance.

Goodness is a fragrance meant to be opened and shared, not kept shut in a box.
The deeper layer

gunaa kaa hovai vaasulaa — a vaasulaa, a fragrance-box or basket, full of virtues, meant to be opened and shared, not hoarded. saajh kareejai gunah kayree — form a partnership of goodness; chhod avgan chalee-ai, leave faults behind and walk on. pahiray patambar — wear virtues like fine silk and enter your own pirh, your arena, with confidence. jithai jaa-ay bahee-ai bhalaa kahee-ai — wherever you sit, speak good. Virtue here is social and generous: goodness multiplies when it is shared.

A Question to Sit With

What is a good quality you could share with a friend so both of you grow stronger?
