He Gives Before We Ask

aap karay kis aakhee-ai hor karay na ko-ee.
He Himself acts; unto whom should we complain? No one else does anything.
aakhan taa ka-o jaa-ee-ai jay bhoolrhaa ho-ee.
Go ahead and complain to Him, if He makes a mistake.
jay ho-ay bhoolaa jaa-ay kahee-ai aap kartaa ki-o bhulai.
If He makes a mistake, go ahead and complain to Him; but how can the Creator Himself make a mistake?
sunay daykhay baajh kahi-ai daan anmangi-aa divai.
He sees, He hears, and without our asking, without our begging, He gives His gifts.
daan day-ay daataa jag biDhaataa naankaa sach so-ee.
The Great Giver, the Architect of the Universe, gives His gifts. O Nanak, He is the True Lord.

In plain words

The One is the doer of all — so who is there to complain to? No one else is running things.

You would take a complaint to someone who made a mistake — but how could the Maker of everything make a mistake? He sees and hears without a word from us, and gives His gifts even before we think to ask.

The Great Giver, the shaper of the whole world, keeps on giving — He is the True One. He is the doer of all; there is no one else to point a finger at.

The Great Giver is already giving — often before I even know to ask.
The deeper layer

aap karay kis aakhee-ai — He Himself acts, so whom would we blame? The pauri playfully dismantles complaint: you complain to someone who erred, but aap kartaa ki-o bhulai, how could the Maker err? daan anmangi-aa divai — He gives gifts unasked: grace precedes the request. This is Guru Nanak's steady note against grievance — not that pain is denied, but that the deepest ground is a Giver who is already giving, sunay daykhay, seeing and hearing before we speak.

A Question to Sit With

Can you think of a gift you received before you even knew to want it?
