Sikhism·Raag Soohee·Shabad 101
Verse 2 of 9

Churn the Nectar and Drink

saahib so salaahee-ai jin kaaran kee-aa.
So praise your Lord and Master, who created the creation.
mail laagee man maili-ai kinai amrit pee-aa.
Filth sticks to the polluted mind; how rare are those who drink in the Ambrosial Nectar.
math amrit pee-aa ih man dee-aa gur peh mol karaa-i-aa.
Churn this Ambrosial Nectar, and drink it in; dedicate this mind to the Guru, and He will value it highly.
aapnarhaa parabh sahj pachhaataa jaa man saachai laa-i-aa.
I intuitively realized my God, when I linked my mind to the True Lord.
tis naal gun gaavaa jay tis bhaavaa ki-o milai ho-ay paraa-i-aa.
I will sing the Lord's Glorious Praises with Him, if it pleases Him; how could I meet Him by being a stranger to Him?
saahib so salaahee-ai jin jagat upaa-i-aa. ||2||
So praise your Lord and Master, who created the creation. ||2||

In plain words

Praise the One who set this whole creation going. A cluttered heart gathers grime — so how rare it is for anyone to actually taste the sweetness of life.

But you can: churn it like butter from milk, drink it in, and give your restless mind over to the Teacher, who will treasure it. When I linked my heart to the True One, I recognized my own Beloved with ease.

I get to sing alongside the One only if it pleases the One — for how could I meet Him while holding myself apart like a stranger? So praise the One who made the world.

The sweetness is already in ordinary life — patient effort churns it out.
The deeper layer

math amrit pee-aa — churn and drink the nectar: the old image of churning milk into butter says the sweetness is already in ordinary life, but it takes patient effort to bring it out. ih man dee-aa gur peh — hand the mind to the Teacher and mol karaa-i-aa, He appraises it as precious. The closing question is tender: ki-o milai ho-ay paraa-i-aa — how can I meet the One while keeping myself a paraa-i-aa, a stranger, holding back? Nearness asks that we stop standing apart.

A Question to Sit With

What is something good that only comes out with patient effort, like butter from milk?
