The Ointment That Pleases the Beloved

anjan taisaa anjee-ai jaisaa pir bhaavai.
Apply such an ointment to your eyes, which is pleasing to your Beloved.
samjhai soojhai jaanee-ai jay aap jaanaavai.
I realize, understand and know Him, only if He Himself causes me to know Him.
aap jaanaavai maarag paavai aapay manoo-aa layv-ay.
He Himself shows me the Way, and He Himself leads me to it, attracting my mind.
karam sukaram karaa-ay aapay keemat ka-un abhayva-ay.
He Himself causes us to do good and bad deeds; who can know the value of the Mysterious Lord?
tant mant pakhand na jaanaa raam ridai man maani-aa.
I know nothing of Tantric spells, magical mantras and hypocritical rituals; enshrining the Lord within my heart, my mind is satisfied.
anjan naam tisai tay soojhai gur sabdee sach jaani-aa. ||4||
The ointment of the Naam, the Name of the Lord, is only understood by one who realizes the Lord, through the Word of the Guru's Shabad. ||4||

In plain words

Wear the kind of beauty that actually pleases the Beloved — the inner kind. I only truly understand when the One helps me understand.

He Himself shows the road and sets my feet on it, gently drawing my heart along. He Himself moves us toward good deeds — and who could ever price such a mystery?

I know nothing of magic spells or fancy rituals; I simply hold the One in my heart, and my mind is content. The real eye-ointment is the Name, understood by the one who comes to know the One through the Teacher's Word.

The truest beauty is inward, and the One who wants to be known helps me know Him.
The deeper layer

anjan naam — the Name as anjan, the eye-ointment that lets you see truly. The pauri sets this against tant mant pakhand — spells, mantras, and hollow ritual — which Guru Nanak sets aside: raam ridai man maani-aa, holding the One in the heart is enough, and the heart is satisfied. Note aap jaanaavai — He himself grants the understanding; even the seeking is His gift. The critique of magical technique applies across traditions: it is not the outward tools but the inward knowing that opens the eyes.

A Question to Sit With

What is a kind of beauty in a person that has nothing to do with how they look?
