Sikhism·Raag Soohee·Shabad 105
Verse 2 of 4

Never Cast Aside

Serve the True Guru, O young and innocent bride; thus you shall obtain the Lord as your Husband.
sadaa hoveh sohaaganee fir mailaa vays na ho-ee raam.
You shall be the virtuous and happy bride of the True Lord forever; and you shall never again wear soiled clothes.
fir mailaa vays na ho-ee gurmukh boojhai ko-ee ha-umai maar pachhaani-aa.
Your clothes shall never again be soiled; how rare are those few, who, as Gurmukh, recognize this, and conquer their ego.
karnee kaar kamaavai sabad samaavai antar ayko jaani-aa.
So make your practice the practice of good deeds; merge into the Word of the Shabad, and deep within, come to know the One Lord.
gurmukh parabh raavay din raatee aapnaa saachee sobhaa ho-ee.
The Gurmukh enjoys God, day and night, and so obtains true glory.
naanak kaaman pir raavay aapnaa rav rahi-aa parabh so-ee. ||2||
O Nanak, the soul-bride enjoys and ravishes her Beloved; God is pervading and permeating everywhere. ||2||

In plain words

Serve the Teacher, young heart, and you will find your Beloved. You will be counted among the loved for good, and never dressed in sorrow again.

Never again in soiled clothes — though only a rare heart, facing the Teacher, sees this and quiets its ego.

So make good deeds your practice, melt into the Word, and come to know the One within. Such a heart delights in the One day and night and receives real honor. It delights in its own Beloved, the One who fills every place.

A heart joined to the One is never cast aside, never marked as lesser.
The deeper layer

sadaa hoveh sohaaganee fir mailaa vays na ho-ee — forever among the loved, never again in mailaa vays, soiled clothes. In the old world, soiled clothes and widowhood were marks of social shame; Guru Amar Das overturns that: a heart joined to the deathless One is never cast aside, never marked as lesser. We keep the promise (never abandoned, never dressed in sorrow) and let go of the stigma. karnee kaar kamaavai — make good action your actual practice; belonging shows in doing.

A Question to Sit With

When have you felt sure you belonged somewhere, so that no one could make you feel left out?
