Low Meets High

ham neevee parabh at oochaa ki-o kar mili-aa jaa-ay raam.
I am lowly, and God is lofty and exalted. How will I ever meet Him?
gur maylee baho kirpaa Dhaaree har kai sabad subhaa-ay raam.
The Guru has very mercifully blessed me and united me with the Lord; through the Shabad, the Word of the Lord, I am lovingly embellished.
mil sabad subhaa-ay aap gavaa-ay rang si-o ralee-aa maanay.
Merging in the Word of the Shabad, I am lovingly embellished; my ego is eradicated, and I revel in joyous love.
sayj sukhaalee jaa parabh bhaa-i-aa har har naam samaanay.
My bed is so comfortable, since I became pleasing to God; I am absorbed in the Name of the Lord, Har, Har.
naanak sohagan saa vadbhaagee jay chalai satgur bhaa-ay.
O Nanak, that soul bride is so very blessed, who walks in harmony with the True Guru's Will.
ham neevee parabh at oochaa ki-o kar mili-aa jaa-ay raam. ||2||
I am lowly, and God is lofty and exalted. How will I ever meet Him? ||2||

In plain words

I feel small, and the One feels so high above — how could we ever meet? Yet the Teacher, full of kindness, joined me, making me lovely through the Word.

Meeting through the Word, the small self dissolves and I revel in joyful love.

My resting place turned comfortable the moment I became pleasing to the One, absorbed in His Name. That heart is truly blessed which walks in step with the Teacher. I feel small, and the One feels so high — yet, through the Teacher, we meet.

I do not have to climb up to the One — kindness reaches down, and we meet.
The deeper layer

ham neevee prabh at oochaa — I am low, God is very high: the felt gap between a small self and the vast One. The pauri answers the gap not by the small self climbing but by grace reaching down, gur maylee baho kirpaa dhaaree. aap gavaa-ay, the small self dissolves, and the meeting happens. We keep neevee as honest smallness before something vast, not self-contempt. sohagan saa vadbhaagee je chalai satgur bhaa-ay — blessed is the heart that walks in step with the Teacher's will.

A Question to Sit With

When something felt too big or too far above you, who helped bridge the distance?
