Healing the One Thing That Holds You Back

soohee chhant mehlaa 4.
Soohee, Chhant, Fourth Mehl:
maarayhis vay jan ha-umai bikhi-aa jin har parabh milan na ditee-aa.
Eradicate the poison of egotism, O human being; it is holding you back from meeting your Lord God.
dayh kanchan vay vannee-aa in ha-umai maar vigutee-aa.
This golden-colored body has been disfigured and ruined by egotism.
moh maa-i-aa vay sabh kaalkhaa in manmukh moorh sajutee-aa.
Attachment to Maya is total darkness; this foolish, self-willed manmukh is attached to it.
jan naanak gurmukh ubray gur sabdee ha-umai chhutee-aa. ||1||
O servant Nanak, the Gurmukh is saved; through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, he is released from egotism. ||1||

In plain words

There is one thing that keeps a heart from meeting the One: the ego (haumai — the feeling of being a separate, cut-off self). It is like a poison to be healed.

This bright, golden gift of a body loses its shine when ego takes it over, and clinging to things that don't last is like sitting in the dark.

But the heart turned toward the Teacher is lifted free — through the Word, the grip of ego simply lets go.

Ego is a poison to be healed, not a sin to be hated — and the Word loosens its grip.
The deeper layer

ha-umai bikhi-aa — ego treated as bikhi-aa, a poison to be healed, never as a thing to hate. deh kanchan, the golden body: precious, dimmed by ego rather than destroyed. The harsher ruined-and-disfigured language is softened; the teaching is that ego dims what is precious, and the Word restores it. Ego as a disease to heal is the project's steady lens.

A Question to Sit With

What helps you let go when you are stuck feeling separate or self-centered?
