Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
There is only One. And the One is found by the True Guru's grace — a gift that is always here, waiting for an open heart.
I have begun to sing the One, and now I am awake — awake in love, both night and day.
Awake in that love, the old heaviness leaves me, and I find myself among beloved, good-hearted people; doubts scatter, and my tangled affairs come right.
Listening closely to the Word, I know a deep peace; by great fortune I keep the Name near. I have stepped into the One's shelter, and I give my body and soul gladly.
This verse is about being awake in love, day and night.
Har rang an-din jaagay: awake, night and day, in the One's love. Jaagnaa means being awake. Here it means a loving, alert attention, the opposite of going through the motions half-asleep. Think of the difference between mumbling "good morning" without looking up, and really seeing the person in front of you.
Sun sarvan banee sahj jaanee: hearing the Word with my ears, I came to know sahj, a natural, easy peace. Gurbani often praises suniai, deep listening. Listening gets the ground ready, like a gardener turning the soil, and peace grows there on its own.
What makes you feel most awake and alive inside?
