Be kind, my Beloved — let my eyes see You.
Give me a thousand tongues, if that's what it takes, so my whole mouth can praise You.
Keeping You in mind, even the fear of death loses its power and no pain can settle in; for You fill the water, the land, the sky — wherever I look, there You are. Doubt and clinging fall away, because You are nearer than the nearest thing.
This verse is a prayer from someone who loves the One so much that one body doesn't feel like enough.
Laakh jihvaa means a hundred thousand tongues. The heart asks for them, so it can praise without end. Think of a friend who is so happy to see you that one hug isn't enough. Love always wants more room.
Nayr hoo tay nayraa: the One is nearer than the nearest thing, closer than your own breath.
This whole shabad (a hymn from the Guru Granth Sahib) is a prayer for more senses: more eyes, more ears, more hands. They are all asked for to meet a closeness that is already complete.
If you could see and thank the One you love most, what would you want to say?
