Says Nanak, please be Merciful to me, God, that my mind may follow Your Path forever. ||3||
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
In plain words
Give me a million hands to serve You, and feet to walk Your path.
Serving the One is like a strong boat that carries whoever climbs aboard safely across the wide sea.
Keeping the One in mind, I cross, and every real wish is filled; even the deepest trouble lifts, peace wells up, and a soundless music rings. Only let my heart keep walking Your path, always.
Loving service is the boat that carries you safely across.
The deeper layer
This verse asks for millions of hands to serve, and feet to walk the One's path.
Bhav saagar naav har sayvaa: serving the One is the boat across the sea of fear. Sayvaa means loving service, helping others with no reward in mind. It is doing, not just feeling. Think of the volunteers in the langar kitchen, the free community kitchen at every gurdwara, rolling rotis for hundreds of strangers.
Karorh hasat means millions of hands. Charan chaleh prabh maarag means feet walking the One's path. Love spills over into action.
Across these verses, the heart has asked for eyes to see, ears to hear, and now hands to serve.
A Question to Sit With
What is a way you could use your hands to help someone this week?
