jinee chalan jaani-aa say ki-o karahi vithaar.
They know that they will have to depart, so why do they make such ostentatious displays?
ਚਲਣ ਸਾਰ ਨ ਜਾਣਨੀ ਕਾਜ ਸਵਾਰਣਹਾਰ ॥੧॥
chalan saar na jaannee kaaj savaaranhaar. ||1||
Those who do not know that they will have to depart, continue to arrange their affairs. ||1||

In plain words

If you know you will have to leave one day, why make such a big show of everything?

It is those who forget they will have to leave who keep piling up and fussing over their affairs.

When you know you're just passing through, you travel light.
The deeper layer

A Second Mehl shalok — Guru Angad. chalan jaani-aa = knowing one must depart; vithaar = ostentatious display, spreading oneself out. The wisdom of traveling light, of not over-investing in the temporary.

A Question to Sit With

What would you stop worrying about if you remembered you are just a visitor here?
