The Gift Greater Than Every Other Gift

Pauree:
tuDh dukh sukh naal upaa-i-aa laykh kartai likhi-aa.
You created pain along with pleasure; O Creator, such is the writ You have written.
naavai jayvad hor daat naahee tis roop na rikhi-aa.
There is no other gift as great as the Name; it has no form or sign.
naam akhut niDhaan hai gurmukh man vasi-aa.
The Naam, the Name of the Lord, is an inexhaustible treasure; it abides in the mind of the Gurmukh.
kar kirpaa naam dayvsee fir laykh na likhi-aa.
In His Mercy, He blesses us with the Naam, and then, the writ of pain and pleasure is not written.
sayvak bhaa-ay say jan milay jin har jap japi-aa. ||6||
Those humble servants who serve with love, meet the Lord, chanting the Chant of the Lord. ||6||

In plain words

You made hurt and joy together, O Creator; that is how You wrote the story.

No other gift is as great as the Naam, and it has no shape or mark you can point to.

The Naam is a treasure that never runs out, and it lives in the heart of the one who turns to the Guru.

In kindness the One gives the Naam, and then the story of hurt and joy is no longer written over you.

Those who serve with love and keep repeating the One's Naam come close to the One.

The greatest gift has no shape — it's the One kept living in your heart.
The deeper layer

dukh sukh naal upaa-i-aa = pain and pleasure created together, a grown-up, honest answer to why pain exists. naavai jayvad hor daat naahee = no gift equals the Name; roop na rikhiaa = it has no form or sign. akhut nidhaan = inexhaustible treasure. fir laykh na likhi-aa = once anchored in the Name, the tossing of pleasure-and-pain no longer writes itself over you.
