Verse 26 of 67

Like Finds Like

mehlaa 2.
Second Mehl:
turday ka-o turdaa milai udtay ka-o udtaa.
That which flows, mingles with that which flows; that which blows, mingles with that which blows.
jeevtay ka-o jeevtaa milai moo-ay ka-o moo-aa.
The living mingle with the living, and the dead mingle with the dead.
naanak so salaahee-ai jin kaaran kee-aa. ||2||
O Nanak, praise the One who created the creation. ||2||

In plain words

Water that flows joins other flowing water. What flies drifts with what flies.

The living gather with the living, and those who have died rest with those who have died.

Nanak says: praise the One who made it all.

Everything finds its own kind — and the One who arranged it is worth praising.
The deeper layer

turday ka-o turdaa milai = like joins like, a meditation on the deep order of things: each thing finds its own. From that order comes praise: so salaahee-ai jin kaaran kee-aa. The dead joining the dead is part of the same pattern of belonging, the body returning to the elements it came from.

A Question to Sit With

Where do you feel you most belong, among your own kind?
