Grace Is Bigger Than Our Slip-Ups

ਮਃ ੧ ॥
mehlaa 1.
First Mehl:
ਨਾਨਕ ਮਨ ਕੇ ਕੰਮ ਫਿਟਿਆ ਗਣਤ ਨ ਆਵਹੀ ॥
naanak man kay kamm fiti-aa ganat na aavhee.
O Nanak, wicked are the uncountable actions of the mind.
ਕਿਤੀ ਲਹਾ ਸਹੰਮ ਜਾ ਬਖਸੇ ਤਾ ਧਕਾ ਨਹੀ ॥੨॥
kitee lahaa sahamm jaa bakhsay taa Dhakaa nahee. ||2||
They bring terrible and painful retributions, but if the Lord forgives me, then I will be spared this punishment. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Nanak says: the wrong turns of the mind are more than anyone can count.

They bring hard and painful results. But when the One forgives, I am not pushed away.

When the One forgives, no one is pushed away.
The deeper layer

A shalok of the First Mehl. man kay kamm fiti-aa ganat na aavhee = the mind's crooked doings are too many to count: an honest look, not self-hatred. sahamm is the dread and pain they bring. jaa bakhsay taa dhakaa nahee = when the One forgives, there is no shove out the door. Grace is given, never earned.

A Question to Sit With

What does it feel like when someone forgives you before you even finish apologizing?
