Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
The callers to prayer, the flute players, the horn blowers, and the singers too —
some are givers and some are askers, and all are accepted only through Your Naam.
Nanak says: I give my whole self to those who hear the Naam and take it to heart.
Every voice that calls out is accepted through the Naam.
A shalok of the First Mehl, open to every tradition. baangaa (the Muslim call to prayer), burgoo and sinyee-aa (the horns of yogis and others), and the singers: every voice is parvaan, accepted, through the One Naam. jinhee sun kai mani-aa = those who heard and accepted, the suniai (listening) and mannai (taking to heart) of Japji.
A Question to Sit With
What are some different ways people around the world reach toward the same wonder?
